Personal Experience

Personal experience, which took place last night in my home. Experienced by my Mom & myself.

Between the estimated hours of 4 & 5 AM, this morning, I heard first, Mexican Trumpets, and then a Bagpipe playing.

My Mother, at the same time, heard something completely different. She heard a man, a very loud man, who was clearly trying to make a point with someone, talking....but as always, could not make out what was being said.

All activity stopped around 5:30 AM.

The weather was calm, the winds were 15 mph from the SE. And inside the home, I had been awake all night (therefore so had my Mom, as she was trying to help me), due to severe leg pain (which is a story for my personal blog, not here).

My personal belief is that the music was that of my relatives, trying to comfort me, by taking my mind off my pain, so I could go to sleep.....as for the man my Mom heard.....I am unsure about that. She did mention that while not being to understand what was being said, she did not recognize this man's voice. But that does not mean he was not a relative, of which is mainly who haunts our home.

Why people fear the paranormal

Traditionally the paranormal means anything that is above or beyond normal. There are thousands of stories in myth and folklore in every culture that could be considered paranormal. In the world today folklore and myth has been replaced by modern media and word of mouth but even here the paranormal abounds. With urban legends, friend of a friend stories, magazines and modern TV shows like ghost hunters or most haunted the paranormal is perhaps deeper in the public’s consciousness than ever before.

So why is it that the majority of paranormal stories are the sort that frightens people? Fear is subjective, what scares one person will not work on another, but the paranormal seems to cross this subjective boundary. Paranormal experiences when they happen to groups of people tend to frighten them all not just one or two of the group.

Media can be blamed for a lot of fear of the paranormal. The majority of paranormal TV shows will take place in very spooky places and at night. These are two things that lend themselves to fear naturally. People are naturally scared of the dark. It is a fear that has evolved as the human race has evolved. It can fade with time as a person matures but inevitably it will rear its ugly head any time a person has to walk around somewhere dark.

Another problem with media coverage of the paranormal is due to the nature of media itself. To keep people watching only the most frightening and spectacular examples of activity can be shown. So instead of intense orbs, paranormal mist or ghostly faces the public is instead treated to angry spirits throwing stuff around like petulant children. So not only are people told that the dark is still scary, now it has angry spirits in it just waiting for anyone to step out of line.

Then there is a mechanism called subconscious fear. A subconscious fear is something that has been experienced by the child or has been implanted in the child’s subconscious by parents during the early phase of life. Children are intensely curious so a child seeing a paranormal event would not cause any fear, but a child talking to an adult about it and being told it's evil, bad or frightening will find any subsequent encounter scary thanks to parenting. Parental imprinting can follow a family line for generations unfortunately.

Another reason the paranormal can be fear-inducing is that it can completely destroy the world-view of a particular person. If a person’s world-view does not include the possibility of life after death or other paranormal mainstays and then it comes face to face with them, it can be a shocking event. Suddenly the world and existence in general becomes a lot bigger than before and some of it cannot be adequately explained. This leads to ideas that maybe the world isn’t as safe as it was before creating fear and anxiety. People are sometimes scared of things they cannot understand or explain.

There are many reasons why people fear the paranormal. Like any fear or phobia, people who are not scared of the paranormal cannot understand that fear in others. It should be understood by people interested in the paranormal though that they are looking at and researching a subject that many people would find taboo making paranormal investigators the equivalent of that creepy kid who likes bugs. People who are scared though should remember that without people who like bugs we would never understand the beauty that they can bring.
